Description:
Males appear dark, having a metallic black abdomen, but with a bright blue segment 8 and a green or blue thorax. Females may have the same colour patterns as males, or be predominantly various combinations of black, green, orange and violet. Immature males have a predominantly green thorax, which changes to blue-green after 5-6 days and then blue within two weeks of emerging. Females commence life either rufescens (reddish-pink thorax) or violacea (violet thorax). After about eight days the thorax becomes yellowish-brown, giving the mature form know as rufescens-obsoleta.
